Ahead of July 4th Holiday, City Warns Of Strict Fireworks Penalties – Pasadena Now (1)
City officials here are warning residents that all fireworks remain strictly prohibited ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, with violators facing fines of up to $50,000 and as much as one year in County jail.

Statistics show that fireworks are among the most dangerous of all consumer products, according to the city, which maintains a very strict enforcement policy under its municipal code.

Pasadena police and firefighters are teaming up for special fireworks enforcement patrols before and during the Fourth of July holiday, with officers authorized to seize fireworks in an effort to protect the public. Parking enforcement officers will ensure that vehicles illegally parked in the city’s hillside areas on July 4th are impounded.

Fire Chief Chad Augustin and Police Chief Gene Harris urge everyone to prioritize safety while responsibly celebrating Independence Day.

Under the city’s ordinance, property owners and tenants are held responsible for permitting the possession, sale, use or discharge of fireworks on their property. Any person who violates the ordinance or state fireworks laws is subject to arrest, vehicle impoundment, serving up to one year in County jail, and being fined up to $50,000. Violators must also pay all costs associated with the safe disposal of confiscated fireworks.

The city’s ban extends to all types of fireworks, including hand-held sparklers that many consider safe. Even sparklers are dangerous and can reach 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, causing serious burns or fires, officials said.

According to National Fire Protection Association statistics, most fireworks-related injuries are caused by so-called “safe and sane” fireworks, which are illegal in Pasadena.

The city offers the following safety reminders for the holiday:

  • Celebrate responsibly and always designate a driver
  • If outdoors, use sunscreen, wear a brimmed hat for shade and stay hydrated
  • Always have someone tending the barbecue and watching the swimming pool when in use
  • Call 9-1-1 for all life-threatening emergencies
  • Call (626) 744-4241 for all other public safety needs

Residents are encouraged to report illegal fireworks by calling (626) 744-4241 or through the city’s mobile app, Pasadena CSC, available on Google Play and the App Store.

“If You See Something, Say Something, especially for illegal fireworks,” the city urges. “Take action to help save your home, property and lives from fire.”

While the Fourth of July is a time of celebration, it can be stressful and dangerous for pets, according to Pasadena Humane. Loud fireworks often cause panic, leading to a surge in lost pets and crowded shelters.

The organization urges residents to take precautions including: keeping pets indoors in a quiet, secure room away from fireworks noise with familiar toys, blankets, and background noise like calming music or television to help soothe anxiety; walking dogs before dark to avoid unexpected fireworks; leaving pets at home rather than bringing them to fireworks shows; trying calming aids such as over-the-counter treats, diffusers or Thundershirts; and consulting veterinarians for pets with anxiety histories.

Pet owners should ensure animals are wearing collars with visible ID tags and that microchips are registered with current contact information. If a pet goes missing or residents find a lost animal, they should call 626-792-7151 extension 997 or emailhello@pasadenahumane.org.
