I did my research.
NewBeauty Editors Carolyn Hsu

Ever since I chopped off my hair to the shortest it’s ever been (the stylist had to go in with the shaver in the back!), my usual arsenal of styling tricks has proven to…well, no longer do the trick. The curling wands that produced perfectly beachy waves on my shoulder-length lob now make my hair twist and flip at odd angles. Styling aids that I used to spray and massage into buns and braids to create texture once I unraveled the ‘do are no longer useful now that my hair is too short to pull back. So, along with venturing out with my new look, I also ventured into new territory: experimenting with a selection of new (both to the market and just to me) products to see what works best on short hair. Ahead, the discoveries that made every day a good hair day.

Fatboy Tousle & Go($28)
Half hairspray and half texturizer, Fatboy’s Tousle & Go creates grit, volume and separation while keeping the effortlessly messy look in-tact all day. Unexpected ingredient aloe, hydrates strands without adding any weight.

Harry Josh Pro Tools Marcel Curling Iron 1 inch($175)
Curling short hair can be tricky since an errant bend can immediately throw off the look by adding too much volume to the wrong part of the style. Perfect tousled waves—lifted at the roots, bent in the middle and straight at the ends—can be easily created using this professional-grade curling iron. First, make sure the barrel and handle are set on “unlocked” mode, which allows the barrel to turn while the handle remains static. Separate hair into one-inch sections and clamp the iron at the roots. Then simply twist the barrel away from the face, while simultaneously pulling the iron down towards the ends. The marcel clip (versus a traditional spring-loaded clip) gives you greater tension control and the ceramic and tourmaline barrel allows the iron to move smoothly from roots to ends without pulling at the hair. The one-inch barrel is the perfect size for super short hair.

In addition to absorbing oil, this hybrid dry shampoo styling product helps to create a pieced, textured look. The paste formula provides superior hold that makes it easy to rework and refresh your style throughout the day (just scrunch!).

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray($46)
A cult classic for a reason, this spray goes beyond simply giving hair a sexy, tousled look (although, it does do that spectacularly). A long list of ingredients including kiwi, ginger root extract, mango, sunflower seed extract and vitamins help to strength, hydrate, thicken and care for the long term health of hair.

Rahua Smoothing Hair Balm($28)
This incredibly light balm smooths frizz and tames flyaways without adding weight or creating a greasy mess the way heavier oils can on short or fine hair. Gardenia oil imparts a beautiful fragrance while boosting shine.

The Good Stuff Volumizing Hydrating Foam No-rinse Conditioner ($8)
My stylist, Jon Reyman, slipped me a secret while he was hacking off my hair. “In order to get the texture and volume you want, you need to skip conditioner,” he advised. The reasoning? Conditioners, masks, creams and other nourishing products can weigh down a style and make it look flat. This foam hydrator, however, offers a solution. The texture is lighter than water but packed with hydrators keep strands soft and conditioned.
